The guarantee of certified AFNOR e-Liquids

What is the AFNOR ?

AFNOR, the « Association Française de Normalisation », is the French national organization for standardization.

Through “4 professions”: Standardization, Publishing, Skills and Certification, the AFNOR Group helps professionals with the implementation of national and international standards. More information here: www.afnor.org

A norm for the vape industry.

With the help of healthcare professionals, consumer cooperatives and FIVAPE, AFNOR is at the origin of the XP D90-300 experimental standard. It is the world’s first standard for vaping products.
It consists of 3 parts:

  • part 1 (March 2015) relates to the equipment (e-cig, box, clearomiser, etc.). It specifies the general safety requirements for e-cigs used with e-liquids (with or without nicotine) and does not apply to devices containing tobacco.
  • part 2 (March 2015) concerns e-liquids. It specifies the general safety and information requirements for e-liquids (with or without nicotine) and their packaging. It also offers suitable analysis methods.
  • part 3 (July 2016) is specific to emissions (material / e-liquid combination).

VDLV e-liquids have been certified by this standard since 2016.

The standard is experimental but above all voluntary. AFNOR certification is the guarantee that an approved control body has verified that the manufacturer is in compliance with the required standards.

XP-D90-300-2 certification is based on several requirements :

  • A rigorous selection of the raw materials used (PG, VG and nicotine of European or American pharmacopoeia quality).
  • The exclusion of ingredients such as heavy metals, sugars and sweeteners, vegetable and mineral oils, vitamins and minerals, stimulating additives, formaldehyde liberators and other substances classified as CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic, reprotoxic) and STOT (specific respiratory tract toxicity class 1)…
  • Control of the concentration of the following substances in e-liquids : diacetyl, acrolein, acetaldehyde and formaldehyde. Their maximum levels have been set by the standard and must be respected.
  • Information provided to consumers on the product. Assistance should be offered via internet and telephone.

It should be noted that e-liquids can fall within wider certification perimeters. Examples: Garantee of French Origin Certification or Eco Cert.
